1939. Harry Pike struggles with the rest of the country through the latter stages of the Great Depression. As a sportswriter, he watches as his jobs keep disappearing. As a Jewish zamler, or luck pusher, he feels the need to help his friend Abner, who is lost in the minor leagues in his quest to play baseball.

But when German forces challenge America to a baseball series, another need arises—Harry knows he must mend the broken zamler trails to get the European Jews to safety before the war machine crushes them all.

"Everyone just wants to be someplace different from where they are." If you can at all relate to this quote from Caldwell's book, you will be well on your way to loving this story. Just as the movie, "Field of Dreams" isn't really about baseball, The Lost Tribe features far more than baseball (although it does this with a great historical and entertaining aspect, also). Caldwell creates characters that (despite their complexities) are easy to relate to. No doubt, you will see situations they find themselves in and in many ways you'll likely relate. Ever had a best friend that you lost contact with and wish you could be close to again? How about the struggle to be your own person, while also respecting your family and background? Or trying to live up to the dreams you had when you were younger and before life got inevitably in the way? There are universal themes such as these that anyone can relate to in The Lost Tribe. Besides the main character of Harry, Caldwell builds characters that are quite memorable. You won't soon forget their stories. My favorite supporting character is a baseball player named Earl Cahill. Caldwell makes Earl come alive with Earl's... unique... personality. There are many scenes that you'll want to re-read because Caldwell uses dialogue that often makes youfeel the situation the characters often find themselves in, especially their relationships to one another. The Lost Tribe is a wonderful book with moments of humor, strong emotions, action... basically everything that makes great stories. You'll find yourself pleasantly lost in the imaginative world Caldwell creates.

The Lost Tribe edition by Matthew Caldwell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The books transported you into the story, making you feel as part of them. You can identity your self in so many aspects. The story looks very casual but it's very beautifully written and has many lessons if one wishes to take.
Here is a very entertaining story which includes some of the disturbing attitudes of the Nazis toward the Jews before World War II. Matthew Caldwell obviously knows his baseball. I'm not a huge baseball fan, but I learned a lot about how the players interact with each other, how they manage away from their families, and how their love of the game and respect for each other can overshadow just about anything. Entwining the tale of the zamler was another interesting addition to the story. I will be recommending this book to others.
I love baseball stories, but this one has a clever twist involving a mythical group known as the zamlers, who have way to channel bad energy into good to help others. Warm hearted tale with enough tension to keep you hooked!
The story was unique and original (at least I've never seen anything like this before) and written well. I would recommend to anyone looking for a good, simple and interesting story. Not sure if there's a sequel planned but the only slight issue I had was too many loose ends. But I guess that's the sign of a good series in the making, "leave your readers wanting more..."
Have tried twice to read this thinking that I was just not in the right frame of mind. Well, no. This book needed a serious editor or something. Disjointed. Disappointing.
I absolutely loved this book! One of my favorite books I've read this year. I liked the setting and the premise, a bit of a different look before the horror got crazy during WW2! I am an avid baseball fan and the baseball part of the story was fun and very dear to my heart! It's hard not to ruin the story, but I liked the choices for the characters and how they we intertwined like the stings inside a baseball! Especially Jane! Looking for to more books by Matthew Caldwell.
I have mixed feelings about this book. The early part of the story had a slow buildup; plus, the first chapters were deceptive, making me feel like the direction of the story would be that of the boy escaping the SS. It wasn't, and thereafter, the boy only was a means to an end. About a third of the way, the story picked up, but still lacked intensity. Harry went to Germany with a plan, but he did little to implement it. It would have been better if readers could have least have seen him wondering what he was going to do, and making attempts to achieve his goal. It wasn't until near the end of the book that the story exploded into something more exciting. But, the ending is good enough that it makes the overall story worth reading.
